Breakfast is the most important meal, they say. They say that you should eat only protein for breakfast. Don’t you dare eating something sugary for breakfast, it will ruin your whole day. Eat fruits. Only fruits for breakfast. Everything else won’t do any good to you. Eat one single egg. Breakfast sets you up for healthy eating patterns for the whole day. Eat an omelette. Made out of egg whites only. Crackers should be your choice. Don’t eat anything at all.
What’s all this about?
Seriously, there are about 1000 theories out there about how you should start your day. And I’ve realised that there is no such thing as the right way to start it. You have to feel it. Your body knows what it needs. And it may be that it needs a different treatment every day. Like mine.
I sometimes love pancakes for breakfast, but realise that in most cases it’s not such a good idea. Sometimes I eat fruit, sometimes I eat a piece (or two, or three) of bread with jam or humus. Sometimes I don’t feel like eating anything (very rare).
And sometimes I need a muesli. Not any muesli, but this muesli. Full of fibres, protein and vitamins. No added sugar, preservatives or any of that stuff. Mmmmmmmhhhhhhh.
- 50 g oat flakes (1/2 cup)
- 1 tbsp. ground flax seed
- 1/2 banana
- 1/2 nectarine or peach
- 1/4 apple
- 2 tbsp. chopped walnuts or other nuts
- 1 tbsp soy yoghurt
Soak the oats and flax seed the evening before in about 150 to 175 ml water. (1/2 to 3/4 cup).
Slice the banana, cube the nectarine and apple (without peeling them). Add walnuts, soy yoghurt and cinnamon. Ready. Ok, probably not for you. Although I love sweets, I’m used to eating my muesli without sugar or agave nectar or maple syrup. But feel free to add any of it or to add raisins, or more banana (mashed, if you prefer that). All in all, feel free to change the whole recipe.
